A magnificent large format book printed and bound to standards seldom seen today, this is a magnum opus on the life and work of the Austrian born Australian artist Eugene Von Guerard.
Eugene Von Guerard travelled to Australia in 1852 and spent time on the Ballarat goldfields. He later moved to Melbourne and was appointed Master of the School of Painting at the National Gallery of Victoria. This book includes a complete illustrated biography with special focus on Von Guerard’s time in Australia. Von Guerard’s own gold digger’s journal is published in full. He also travelled and painted in New Zealand and some beautiful paintings are included of this trip most famously of Milford Sound.
50 of Eugene Von Guerard’s paintings are reproduced to an exceptionally high standard. Each one has been carefully coloured checked to match the original paintings, printed onto art paper and tipped into the book.
There is also a catalogue raisonné of his work.
He was born in Vienna in 1811 and his father was a painter of miniatures and became a court painter to Emperor Franz I. This artistic family background enabled Eugene to travel and paint and while in Italy he came in contact with several of the Nazarene group. By 1852 he was established as a landscape painter and had attracted the patronage of the Dowager Queen Maria Isabella.

Printed in Japan using beautiful papers the binding is quarter bound in calf leather with a linen casing and gilt decorated binding. Housed in a hand crafted solander box with handmade end papers and blind blocked with silver.
