The Grimmelings by Rachel King

The Grimmelings by Rachel King is an interesting tale of a girl and her horse. The story starts with the pair taking on a quest to find a boy called John, who the girl, Ella, has supposedly cursed. Ella knows that her family are unusual and everyone else seems to think that they are witches. However Ella does not want to think that she is a witch herself, but she is torn over the fact that just after she cursed the boy, he went missing days later. But Ella surely knows not wish and curse on the same day, right?

She lives on a farm with her mother, sister and grandmother, who own a trekking business with their horses. But Ella’s horse Magpie seems to be different, her small ears and brave personality, and the fact that only Ella can touch her. They seem to be drawn to go on a life saving mission to find out what is going on. After a long route of twists and turns, will they find out what the black horse wants? And how does that boy Gus seem to appear from her wish?

My favourite part of this book is the plot twist at the end, a true plot twist with no anticipation. I never thought it would end that way but it did, and you should find out too. I recommend this novel to readers 11 to 12. I enjoyed reading this and rate it 9/10.
