Street Wise Streets of Carterton Greytown Featherston & Martinborough

$25.00

Author: Winter G

Following the outstanding success of Street Stories, which recounted the origins of Masterton's streets, the Wairarapa Archive was repeatedly asked when it was going to turn its attentions to the streets of South Wairarapa towns. Street Wise was first published in 1999. The second edition, with new streets added, by Wairarapa archivist Gareth Winter. The four towns of South Wairarapa were established differently – and this influenced street naming approaches to a greater or lesser degree. Greytown was settled under the auspices of the Small Farms Association; Carterton and Featherston were settled under the aegis of the Wellington Provincial Council; while Martinborough was a privately developed town. Wellington Provincial Council members named the streets of Featherston after themselves. The Hon. John Martin toured the world shortly before Martinborough was laid out and named streets after the countries, cities and famous streets that particularly appealed to him. Greytown has a more conventional mix of street names, while Carterton had a penchant for scientists and philanthropists.
