Claire Hills has written a marvellous book about the whole range of the Catholic wider aspects of the story, taking us to Marist origins in France and changing policies for integrated schools, but the story is never laboured or dull. And the illustrations make this book a must! Delightful photographs, paintings and stained-glass windows draw us into the story, doubtless serving as a potent reminder for some, and enabling the outsider to visualise what it was like. For those interested in trends in religious history, the Wairarapa story is significant. I warmly commend this book.

Dr Claire Hills has been steadily building up a reputation for fine, most meticulous research. Heritage and Horizon – 180 Years of Wairarapa Catholic history, is Claire’s latest venture. As with her previous work, she addresses a significant gap in New Zealand’s historical literature. So much of our historical research has been primarily focused on the governmental level. Hence, significant areas of New Zealand’s history continue to be ignored.
